Ptuj

In carnival time parades and events are held in many Slovenian towns. The main actors are carnival characters that have been revered through centuries. And in no other place, is this more true than in the town of Ptuj. Joins us for a day.

Let’s meet the locals while experiencing a truly Slovenian carnival.

Carnival merriment under the UNESCO protection

In Slovenia the name of the carnival is Pust. The most significant and in Slovenia the most known are the carnival parades in the town of Ptuj. The Ptuj region is the home of a popular character called The Kurent. He is a monstrous, demon-like creature from another world, but it is said that this magical monster casts off the bad luck and brings happiness and contentment.

And, of course, there is much more to be experienced in the town of Ptuj. Ptuj is known as the oldest Slovenian town and definitely equals the capital Ljubljana in terms of historical importance.

What to Expect

Small group approach with carefully planned time, where experienced local tour operator’s chauffeur  guide will collect you at the designated location for an hour and half long ride to Ptuj. Upon arrival you will be introduced to your destination and possible activities to experience. Kurentovanje  was selected as one of the top 10 carnivals in the world.

If your choice will be to attend the carnival on Saturday you are going to be part of the carnival procession through the streets and squares of the old town centre. The townspeople dress in all kinds of costumes. The procession dates back to the year 1873 and it is the living proof of how the carnival is rooted in the hearts of the citizen of Ptuj.

If however, your choice will be to attend the Ptuj carnival on Sunday an international parade will definitely cheer you up. This international carnival procession is the highlight of Kurentovanje. The streets and markets of Ptuj are flooded with a thousand-headed crowd of carnival masks and traditional characters. Original carnival groups and many satirical characters provide for a very special atmosphere and a unique experience.

Upon choice, you will also have time to visit the town and its castle. Not s demanding climb up some steps will take you to the glorious Ptuj castle from the first half of the 12th century. The castle is a mixture of various styles, yet worth a visit. From its ramparts you’ll admire the red-tiled roofs of old town houses and the Drava river that runs through the town.

However, if you do not want to cope with the steps to the castle there is another way to get to know the city. Take a leisurely walk through the town’s medieval cobblestone alleys. They will take you past ancient Roman monuments and medieval facades, monasteries, churches and other magnificent buildings.

The vibrant café culture of Ptuj in the time of the carnival might persuade you to take a rest and just enjoy in the glorious experience Slovania’s oldest town has to offer. Time and availability permitting we are also going to taste some fine varieties of local wine.

Most important – enjoy the carnival atmosphere and remember, after meeting the Kurent good luck is following you.

After a nice full day experience we will return back to Ljubljana. Drop off will be at same location as pickup.

  • Enjoy the carnival in the oldest Slovenian town
  • Have fun watching the carnival parades
  • Meet the Kurent, a demon like creature that brings luck
  • Enjoy the vibrant street life of Ptuj
